Vulnerability Note VU#107998
MailPost vulnerable to cross-site scripting in the 'append' variable passed to the file as part of an HTTP GET request
OverviewA cross-site scripting vulnerability is reported to exist in MailPost version 5.1.1sv and possibly earlier versions.
I. DescriptionAccording to a report by ProCheckUp, MailPost is vulnerable to a Cross-Site Scripting attack via the 'append' variable. The 'append variable is passed as part of an HTTP GET request when the debug mode is enabled. In debug mode, the variables passed to the script are echoed to the screen without any filtering. Note that debug mode is enabled in the default configuration file.II. ImpactThe victim site may present malicious content to their visitors. This could be used to "sniff" sensitive data from within the web page and cookie files, including passwords, credit card numbers, and any arbitrary information the user inputs. III. SolutionThe CERT/CC is currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem.
Until a resolution can be applied it may be possible to mitigate this vulnerability by disabling debug mode.
